A leading health department aimed to develop an AI-powered decision support tool that combines natural language processing (NLP) with medical knowledge extraction.

The goal was to help healthcare professionals respond to complex queries with accurate and context-rich answers. Based on structured clinical records, medical literature and research data, the system improves access to reliable information and enhances decision quality in fast-paced clinical environments.

Status quo

Before the tool was introduced, healthcare professionals had to manually research answers to medical questions using scattered sources like journals, notes or documentation.

his process often led to inconsistent outcomes, long search times and added workload. Especially in time-sensitive situations, access to structured and trustworthy content was lacking. No unified system existed for processing free-text clinical questions efficiently.

The challenge

The main challenge was to design a tool that could process free-text medical queries and provide context-aware responses by combining structured and unstructured data sources.

The solution needed to extract relevant insights from clinical notes, research articles and documentation—then deliver useful responses tailored to specific clinical needs. At the same time, the interface had to be intuitive, privacy-compliant and adaptable to various medical specialties.

The solution

CONVOTIS developed a solution using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with a clinically optimized LLM.

Medical data from various sources was preprocessed using a document retriever, which extracted and contextualized information to generate prompts. Based on this, the LLM generated accurate answers or medical summaries. The interface allows for tailored searches, flexible output formats and secure use in clinical environments—without integration into primary systems.

The result

The system improves the quality of clinical decision-making, speeds up knowledge access and enhances the reliability of information.

It delivers medically accurate, context-based answers directly within the workflow—supporting physicians in diagnostics, treatment planning and interdisciplinary communication. The tool also helps standardize clinical documentation and boosts decision confidence, marking a measurable improvement in both clinical performance and patient care quality.
